Mind the Gap: Assessing Vulnerability Across Populations

Aim of our study
To investigate sensitivity to climate (extreme events) and air pollution-related exposures in vulnerable populations (elderly, immigrants, infants, children, pregnant women, homeless, outdoor workers), and explore specific adaptation measures addressing these sensitivities in vulnerable populations in Canada and South Asian countries.
Our strategy
We will conduct three scoping reviews that examine:
Health-related exposure to extreme events like wildfires and flood and air pollution,
Sensitivity to these exposures, and
Adaptive capacity of systems, institutions, and humans to cope with these exposures.
Social benefits of this study
This work can be used to:
Promote the development of interventions to reduce health risks in the vulnerable populations,
Target gaps in our knowledge,
Promote more research in these areas
Assist organizations in working with these vulnerable groups to adapt to climate change impacts, and
Help inform policies that address climate change
Scholarly benefits of this study
Three manuscript (three scoping reviews) will be generated and submitted to open access journal to increase their visibility,
A fourth manuscript (qualitative analysis), will also be published in a widely respected journal,
The manuscripts will all be led by graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, which provides training opportunities for these emerging scholars as well as graduate supervision opportunities for the team.
Our knowledge mobilization plan
Scholarly presentations are planned at conferences to reach researchers, clinicians, students, and educators,
Our workshops intend to bring together local and national governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, community groups, and members of the public for discussions,
Website, social media, and infographics are aimed at the general public and media,
Reports and evidence briefs are intended for policymakers.
